ethernet port not displaying throughput

Eben King
I have a  "GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-H170-Gaming 3 (rev. 1.0) LGA 1151 Intel
H170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard" (says Newegg), which has
a "Qualcomm Atheros Killer E2200 Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 10)" (says
lspci).  It works with what the router says is a gigabit connection, but
won't display bytes xmitted/rxed or any of that good stuff in ifconfig.
Anyone know how to make it spill its guts?

eth1      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 40:8d:5c:4a:53:31
           inet addr:  Bcast:  Mask:
           inet6 addr: fe80::428d:5cff:fe4a:5331/64 Scope:Link
           RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
           TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
           collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
           RX bytes:0 (0.0 B)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

Also, it's called "eth1" and there's only one ethernet port on this
motherboard, but that's merely cosmetic.

It uses the "alx" module:

eben@pc:~$ lsmod | grep alx
alx                    32452  0
mdio                   13807  1 alx

plus whatever-the-heck "mdio" is:

eben@pc:~$ modinfo mdio
filename:       /lib/modules/3.13.0-46-generic/kernel/drivers/net/mdio.ko
